VSL Shear Rails

VSL Shear Rails

Developed to mitigate the impact of punching shear at slab-column connections, VSL Shear Rails consist of large head steel studs that are welded to flat steel rails. When used at the column and slab connection, the VSL Shear Rails increase the shear capacity of the slab.

Quick and easy to install, VSL Shear Rails reduce the traditional congestion associated with the placement of shear reinforcement, as well as eliminate the need for column capitals. Ideal for use in all concrete construction high shear applications such as post-tensioning slabs, walls, transfer beams and off-shore structures, the improved slab and column ductility afforded by the VSL Shear Rail allows for high resistance to seismic and other fluctuating loads. Further, the use of the VSL Shear Rail enables the use of smaller columns for less building mass.

The growing use of post-tensioned concrete to meet the needs of owners seeking thinner flat slabs and structures with longer spans and more uninterrupted area has resulted in a greater focus in punching shear reinforcement requirements. The traditional solution for punching shear is the use of structural shear-heads or rebar stirrups as reinforcement for the high shear forces. The use of VSL Shear Rails, when designed in accordance with ACI 421.1R99, provides designers and contractors with a more economical and efficient solution for thin post-tensioning slabs.
