Stay Cable Bridge Retrofit
Baytown, Texas

The Fred Hartman Bridge is an existing stay cable bridge spanning approximately 1,300 feet across the Houston (Texas) Ship Channel. To mitigate stay vibration caused by rain and wind, VSL was contracted to furnish and install viscous dampers and cable restraints. A special platform was designed to provide access to the cables outside of the bridge's concrete barriers and to ensure the safety of VSL crews.  Each damper was anchored to the bridge deck by a galvanized pedestal with six threaded rods. A concrete pad was poured under each pedestal to create a level-bearing surface. A stainless steel collar system was attached to the HDPE stay pipe, which was connected with a special yoke assembly to the other end of the damper. In total, VSL installed 176 dampers and 24 cable restraints on the bridge.
